Mississippi Valley Conservancy is a land trust organization that protects over 20,000 acres of public and private land in southwestern Wisconsin. With a mission to conserve the native and farm lands of southwestern Wisconsin for the well-being of future generations, the Mississippi Valley Conservancy dedicates itself to protecting habitat, including habitat vital to the monarch butterfly. “We base all of our work on a ‘forever’ mission,” says Conservation Specialist Megen D. Kabele. “Such as monarch habitat forever protected from mining & development with a conservation easement, best conservation practices encouraged on private lands, and restoration implemented on our fee title lands. The monarch umbrellas a host of other species we will also protect in perpetuity.”
The Mississippi Valley Conservancy approaches conservation by working through three areas: land protection, sustainable land management, and education and outreach. In addition to managing their own nature preserves, they work closely with local landowners to raise awareness of best land management practices and the financial incentives of conservation. They also host a number of recreational and educational events for all ages to promote wellness and connecting to nature.
